International
Applicants: Optometrists
from the UK, Ireland, Canada, Sth Africa and the USA are welcome to contact us.
We can assist with guiding you through the registration process to practise as
well as immigration and visas for those who do not hold either an Australian or
New Zealand passport.
If your qualifications are not from an Australian or New Zealand
University, you will need to undergo an examination run by the Australian
Optometry Council. CLICK
HERE If your qualifications are from the United
Kingdom, South Africa, Ireland, Canada or the USA, you will be eligible to
undertake the Australian Optometry Council examinations for registration. This
is a 2 part process involving a written examination and a practical / clinical
examination held in Melbourne. Both examinations are held twice a year.
Applicants must pass the written examination before being eligible to come to
Melbourne to sit the clinical section. Only once applicants have passed
both examinations are they eligible to register with the Optometry Board of
Australia
Registration: As
of July 1st 2010, Australia has moved to a single registration entity
for Optometrist’s and away from the state board system. The
Optometry Board of Australia is now the national regulator. Optometrist’s must
be registered with the board to be able to practise.

Visas: New Zealand Optometrists can enter Australia and work on
their NZ passport. For all other nationalities, you will need a visa.
The most common are:
1.
The working holiday visa for
those under the age of 31 and from either Belgium, Canada, Republic of Cyprus,
Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Republic of Ireland,
Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan and
United Kingdom. If you from one of these countries you are eligible for this
visa.
2.
Sponsored working visa - if
you not from one of the above countries or are over the age of 30, then you need
an "Employer Sponsor" to provide a visa for you to enter and work in
Australia. First, you need to undertake the qualification assessment. When this
is completed, contact us and we can try and find a sponsor for you.
Note: This visa ties you to your sponsor, it does not allow you to travel
and change employment in Australia on arrival. Most Australian employers will
usually require a contract length of around 2 years to offer a visa to
international candidates under sponsorship.
