The Process for Working in
the UK
Compliance - Compliance -
Compliance!!!!!
Compliance is a word used to
describe the steps you need to undertake and the documents you need to gather in
order to be able to work in the UK. It is the first and one of the most
important steps in your journey. If you head to the UK non compliant to work,
chances are you will end up just having a holiday and not being able to
undertake employment in your profession.
Before you leave Australia to head to the UK
there are a number of things that you need to undertake on these shores prior to
departure. It is imperative that you take close notice of these instructions in
order to be in a position to gain your UK job. Don't be one of the Radiographers
that turns up in the UK not compliant and unable to work!
1. Professional Registration:
The Health
Professions Council (HPC) is the regulatory body for the registration of
health professionals in the UK and they upkeep the professional standards and
assessment of international workers entering the UK. Registration with the HPC
in mandatory to be able to work and is also required prior to applications for
employment. Recruitment agencies under UK framework agreements cannot offer
employment to persons until sighting their HPC registration. The HPC also has an
online live register for employers to check that applicants are currently
registered. This can be access 24/7. Applications to the HPC can take between 2
and 4 months to complete. Applicants should allow for 4 months to be safe. It is
imperative that you arrange this before leaving Australia as you can access your
required documents much more easily here. With any questions on the HPC process
your Allied Health Employment consultant will be able to assist you. Just call
us or send an email
2. Working Visa:
As the holder of an Australian or New Zealand
passport you will need a specific visa to enter and work in the UK. There are
several types of working visa such as

our UK Working Visa page
3. Criminal Record Check:
As with anyone working in the health
care system or moving country to undertake employment, a clear criminal history
is mandatory. The UK National Health Service requires a recent CRC for all it's
employees whether they are permanent workers or agency locums. You will need a
CRC in Australia and also the UK (even if you have never been to the UK!)
Contact us at Allied Health Employment for more details on how to arrange your
Criminal Record checks. Email
4. Resume
You will need a resume to work in
the UK. Spend some time on your resume but remember to keep it concise.
Provide your resume in point form
outlining
-
where you have worked
-
dates and the areas of the
profession you cover eg modalities etc
-
qualifications - don't forget
year and academic institution
-
referees - provide at
least 2 current referees names, positions and their contact details via
phone and email. Referees should be someone in management that you
are working with. Don't forget to tell to ask your referees for permission
-
personal details
Your resume should be under 2-3 A4
pages in total length and should resemble a series of point forms. Resumes in
"essay form" are easily dismissed by busy employers sorting through
applications who might not have time to read them in their entirety.
5. Professional References
The UK runs on a system of written
referencing and not telephone referencing. In order to meet the compliance to
work in the UK, you are required to provide 2 written professional references in
writing. These must be on a letter head from the site you have worked and not
from personal friends or family as they are professional documents.
6. Medical Examinations
This is the part that a lot of
applicants don't like but again is mandatory. UK framework guidelines are such
that those entering the UK healthcare system as employees or locums must have
proof of immunity levels to a series of medical conditions such as Hep C, Hep B,
TB, MMR etc. We can send you the details of what is required for your medical
assessment so you can get this done well before leaving Australia. Email
us for further details. As a healthcare worker, you cannot be offered
employment in the UK without evidence of recent medical assessment.
7. Where Will I work?
In a lot of cases this is really up
to you. It is also one of the most exciting things about heading to the UK. The
thought and prospect of where you will spend your time, where you will work, who
you will meet etc. We can offer employment all over the UK, England, Scotland,
Wales and Northern Ireland as well sometimes in such remote places and the
Orkney and Shetland Islands or the Channel Islands. Remember however, you cannot
be offered employment until you are full compliant with the above details. We
have a full range of roles across General Radiography, CT, MRI, Angio, Cardiac
Cath, Therapy and Ultrasound.
8. How Should I Get There?
There are lots of options to get to
the UK and some of the best by far can be found on the internet. Internet
bookings these days are the way to go for smart travellers looking for
flexibility and also cheap fares. Why spend your hard earned dollars on
corporate travel agency commissions and fees. Even if you feel more comfortable
using a corporate travel agent, you should always check internet fares as well
to get a guide for what is out there as they will usually price match. You can
save yourself hundreds of dollars. The following links will provide you with 2
of the main providers of airfares out of Australia.

9. Where Will I Stay?
This really depends on you and what
you want to do on arrival. Perhaps you have friends or family in the UK that you
can go to on arrival, perhaps you are heading straight off for a Contiki tours
or perhaps you want to get right into employment.
As a general rule, a lot of the
regional hospitals in the UK have staff residence accommodation for nominal
rental and if you have have a work assignment in one of these locations we can
line something up for you this way. Hospitals in London tend not to offer
accommodation on site for staff.
There are many ranges of
accommodation in the UK from back packers hostels to 5 star hotels for the well
heeled medical professional. There are bed sits as well as shared houses for
those looking for something a bit more permanent.
One of the best sites is www.tntonline.co.uk
which has miles on information on the UK, getting there, where to stay and how
to get around. Even right down to buying a mobile SIM card!
What Should I Do To Start?
Contact us for our information pack
that covers all the above and more on the process to working in the UK. You
should begin the process at least 4 months prior to your intended departure to
the UK in order to have all the necessary compliance documents in place.
Once your file is complete at this end, we can then discuss with you details of
employment and what is available to suit your arrival.
