Compliance!!!!!
Compliance is a word used to
describe the steps you need to undertake and the documents you need to gather in
order to be able to work in the UK. It is the first and one of the most
important steps in your journey. If you head to the United Kingdom non compliant to work,
chances are you will end up just having a holiday and not being able to
undertake employment in your profession.
Before you leave Australia to head to the UK
there are a number of things that you need to undertake on these shores prior to
your departure. It is imperative that you take close notice of these instructions in
order to be in a position to gain your UK job. Don't be one of the Registered Nurses
that turns up in the UK not compliant and unable to work!
1. Professional Registration For
Registered Nurses In The UK:
The Nursing and Midwifery
Council (NMC) is the regulatory body for the registration Registered Nurses
in the UK and they upkeep the professional standards and
assessment of international and local Registered Nurses working in the UK. Registration with the
NMC is mandatory to be able to work as a Registered Nurse and is also required prior to applications for
employment. Recruitment agencies under UK framework agreements cannot offer
employment to persons until sighting their NMC registration. The NMC also has an
online live register for employers to check that applicants are currently
registered. This can be access 24/7. Applications to the NMC will take a certain
amount of time to complete, usually more than 6 months. The NMC also asks that
as a first step all applicants undertake the IELTS
(International English Language Test),
this is required before completing the NMC application form. Contact us at
Medacs to discuss booking your IELTS and the rest of the process. On arrival in
the UK you also have to undertake the Overseas
Nursing Program (ONP), which is a
short academic course. With any questions on the NMC process, contact
your Medacs Healthcare / Allied Health Employment consultant will be able to assist you. Just call
us or send an email
2. Working Visa:
As the holder of an Australian or New Zealand
passport you will need a specific visa to enter and work in the UK. There are
several types of working visa such as
-
The Youth Mobility Visa - which allows you to
enter and work in the UK for 2 years as long as you are under the age of 31
years
-
Ancestry Visa - for those with UK ancestry
(grandparents born in the UK)
-
Sponsored Work Permit - this
is a visa provided to you by your employer for a contract period (usually
1-2 years) and it is arranged while still in Australia prior to leaving for
the UK. We will assist you to find employment and arrange the permit. We
currently have lots of roles available.
For more information on visas for the UK visit
our UK Working Visa page. Should you be not eligible
for a Youth Mobility Visa or Ancestry, don't despair, we can arrange a working
permit for you through an employer when you accept a role.
3. Criminal Record Check:
As with anyone working in the health
care system or moving country to undertake employment, a clear criminal history
is mandatory. The UK National Health Service requires a recent CRC for all it's
employees whether they are permanent workers or agency locums. You will need a
CRC in Australia and also the United Kingdom (even if you have never been to the UK!)
Contact us at Medacs Healthcare for more details on how to arrange your
Criminal Record checks. Email
4. Resume - Registered Nurse
You will need a resume to work in
the United Kingdom. Spend some time on your resume but remember to keep it concise.
Provide your resume in point form
outlining
-
where you have worked
-
dates and the areas of the
profession you cover eg modalities etc
-
qualifications - don't forget
year and academic institution
-
referees - provide at
least 2 current referees names, positions and their contact details via
phone and email. Referees should be someone in management that you
are working with. Don't forget to ask your referees for permission as
we will be contacting them!
-
personal details
Your resume should be under 2-3 A4
pages in total length and should resemble a series of point forms. Resumes in
"essay form" are easily dismissed by busy employers sorting through
applications who might not have time to read them in their entirety.
5. Professional References To
Work as a Registered Nurse In The UK
The UK runs on a system of written
referencing and not telephone referencing. In order to meet the compliance to
work in the UK, you are required to provide 2 written professional references in

from personal friends or family as they are professional documents.
6. Where Will I Work As A
Registered Nurse In The UK?
In a lot of cases this is really up
to you. It is also one of the most exciting things about heading to the United
Kingdom. The
thought and prospect of where you will spend your time, where you will work, who
you will meet etc. We can offer employment all over the UK, England, Scotland,
Wales and Northern Ireland as well sometimes in such remote places and the
Orkney and Shetland Islands or the Channel Islands. Remember however, you cannot
be offered employment until you are full compliant with the above details.
We can offer roles throughout the NHS as well at the private and community
sectors in the UK. Medacs also manages healthcare delivery to the UK corrective
services and some community care agencies as well.
7. How Should I Get To The UK?
There are lots of options to get to
the United Kingdom and some of the best by far can be found on the internet. Internet
bookings these days are the way to go for smart travellers looking for
flexibility and also cheap fares. Why spend your hard earned dollars on
corporate travel agency commissions and fees. Even if you feel more comfortable
using a corporate travel agent, you should always check internet fares as well
to get a guide for what is out there as they will usually price match. You can
save yourself hundreds of dollars. The following links will provide you with 2
of the main providers of airfares out of Australia and New Zealand.

If you plan to travel BEFORE getting
to the UK, just make sure that you have finished your compliance BEFORE
you leave. Imagine being in the jungles of the Amazon and trying to get a
certified copy of your degree in Australia or similar? It could be an expensive
trip back home!
8. Where Will I Stay While
Working As a Registered Nurse In the UK?
This really depends on you and what
you want to do on arrival. Perhaps you have friends or family in the United
Kingdom that you
can go to on arrival, perhaps you are heading straight off for a Contiki tours
or perhaps you want to get right into employment.
Some hospitals in
the country areas of the UK have "Nurses Quarters". While by no means
the flashest places on earth they are social and can provide a cheap alternative
with easy access to work and no need to sign or enter long term leases.
There are many ranges of
accommodation in the UK from back packers hostels to 5 star hotels for the well
heeled medical professional. There are bed sits as well as shared houses for
those looking for something a bit more permanent.
One of the best sites is www.tntonline.co.uk
which has miles on information on the UK, getting there, where to stay and how
to get around. Even right down to buying a mobile SIM card!
