the United Kingdom As a Social Worker

Compliance!!!!!
Compliance is a word used to
describe the steps you need to undertake and the documents you need to gather in
order to be able to work in the UK. It is the first and one of the most
important steps in your journey. If you head to the United Kingdom non compliant to work,
chances are you will end up just having a holiday and not being able to
undertake employment in your profession.
Before you leave Australia to head to the UK
there are a number of things that you need to undertake on these shores prior to
your departure. It is imperative that you take close notice of these instructions in
order to be in a position to gain your UK job. Don't be one of the Social Workers
that turns up in the UK not compliant and unable to work!
1. Professional Registration For
Social Workers
In The UK:
General Social Care Council is the regulatory body for the registration
Social Workers in the UK and they upkeep the professional standards and
assessment of international and local Social Workers working in the UK. Registration with the
GSCC is mandatory to be able to work as a Social Worker and is also required prior to applications for
employment. Recruitment agencies under UK framework agreements cannot offer
employment to persons until sighting their GSCC registration. The GSCC also has an
online live register for employers to check that applicants are currently
registered. This can be access 24/7. Applications to the GSCC can take between 2
and 4 months to complete. Applicants should allow for 4 months to be safe. It is
imperative that you arrange this before leaving Australia as you can access your

2. Working Visa:
As the holder of an Australian or New Zealand
passport you will need a specific visa to enter and work in the UK. There are

for a Youth Mobility Visa or Ancestry, don't despair, we can arrange a working

3. Criminal Record Check:
As with anyone working in the health
care system or moving country to undertake employment, a clear criminal history
is mandatory. The UK National Health Service requires a recent CRC for all it's
employees whether they are permanent workers or agency locums. You will need a
CRC in Australia and also the United Kingdom (even if you have never been to the UK!)

4. Resume - Social Worker
You will need a resume to work in
the United Kingdom. Spend some time on your resume but remember to keep it concise.
Provide your resume in point form

least 2 current referees names, positions and their contact details via
phone and email. Referees should be someone in management that you

pages in total length and should resemble a series of point forms. Resumes in
"essay form" are easily dismissed by busy employers sorting through
applications who might not have time to read them in their entirety.
5. Professional References To
Work as a Social Worker In The UK
The UK runs on a system of written
referencing and not telephone referencing. In order to meet the compliance to
work in the UK, you are required to provide 2 written professional references in
writing. These must be on a letter head from the site you have worked and not
from personal friends or family as they are professional documents.
6. Where Will I Work As A
Social Worker In The UK?
In a lot of cases this is really up
to you. It is also one of the most exciting things about heading to the United
Kingdom. The
thought and prospect of where you will spend your time, where you will work, who
